Bob Dixon — Therapist, Hypno-Psychotherapist, Coach & Fellow Human Being

A lot of men don’t see themselves as the “therapy type.” They just get on with things — even when life feels heavy, confusing, or off track. But here’s the truth: sometimes something just isn’t running right under the bonnet.

You’d take your car to a garage if it started misfiring, wouldn’t you? You’d want to know what’s going on — and fix it before something major went wrong. So why treat your own happiness, mental and emotional health any differently?

Therapy with me isn’t about labels or being told what to do. It’s about two men sitting down — taking a proper look at what’s going on in your life and why it might not be running as smoothly as it could. No judgment. Just clarity, honesty, and the kind of conversation that can actually change things.

How I Work

I’ve spent 25 years as a therapist, working with men from all kinds of backgrounds — from ages 14 to 85. Some were struggling with anxiety, burnout, or confidence. Others were carrying trauma from early life, or the fallout of being bullied — by partners, schoolmates, or controlling bosses.

And many were dealing with the pressure and confusion that can come with relationships — especially in a world where roles and expectations are shifting fast. Dealing with close relationships, particularly when a partner may be experiencing their own difficulties, can feel like trying to tune an engine while you’re already on the road. It's demanding, emotionally draining at times, and can leave even the most capable men feeling lost or alone.

Often, men just carry on. But it’s the more self-aware ones — the ones with agency — who say:

“I don’t like what’s happening in my life… so I’m going to sort it out.”

That’s not weakness. That’s wisdom.

My Approach

My work is grounded in empathy, neuroscience, and practical, real-life understanding. I draw on person-centred counselling, hypno-psychotherapy, coaching, and NLP — combining depth with action.

I’m especially interested in how early experiences shape the way men see themselves and the world — often without realising it. Together, we’ll explore those old beliefs, patterns, and emotional habits, and begin to shift what no longer serves you.

This work isn’t about becoming someone else — it’s about becoming more fully yourself.

A Bit About Me

I’ve had a pretty varied life — and I bring that with me into my work. Graduate Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling Qualified Hypno-Psychotherapist NLP Practitioner (trained with Richard Bandler & Paul McKenna) Qualified Coach (The Coaching Academy) Graduate Diploma in Social Work Degree in Electronic Engineering Post Graduate Certification in Education Years working in education, accounting, and IT consulting 15 years with SCOPE, leading a team of 100 people working with young adults with cerebral palsy 3 years as a frontline social worker working with families who have children with disabilities Over 25 years in private practice Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy

I’m over 70 now, and I’ve seen how the world keeps changing — especially for men. The old rules don’t work anymore. We’re expected to be open and emotionally intelligent, but still solid and reliable. To lead, but also listen. To carry responsibilities without cracking. That’s not easy.

If you’re trying to make sense of your role — as a partner, a father, a son, a man — and something just feels off, you’re not broken. You’re human.

Fees & First Step

I work face-to-face in a quiet, comfortable room in central Lancaster where there is free parking. I also offer online sessions over Zoom. 50 – 60 minute sessions cost £50 and I offer a free 20-minute phone or Zoom chat to see if we’re a good fit.

If something in your life feels off — even if you can’t quite put your finger on it — you don’t have to figure it out alone. Sometimes a single honest conversation can get the wheels turning again.

Get in touch if you think that you might like to talk.
